Wildfire Prevention, Monitoring and Response

Through careful monitoring of wildfires, preventative strategies, direct firefighting and habitat restoration, CIWY works to protect its sanctuaries, the surrounding jungle and the animals that depend on these ecosystems.

Wildfire Monitoring and Prevention

During fire season, typically August–November in Bolivia, CIWY teams work to monitor and where possible prevent wildfires that threaten our sanctuaries.

This includes night watches, an infrared drone and the creation of firebreaks to prevent the rapid and uncontrolled spread of fire. We also maintain close connections with local authorities to support our teams during fire season and receive rescued wildlife from surrounding areas.

Direct Firefighting

When necessary, CIWY is equipped with water backpacks and firefighting equipment to directly fight fires that threaten our sanctuaries and animals.

The wildfires of 2024 were one of the most challenging periods in recent history for Ambue Ari and demonstrated the importance of maintaining a trained team, sufficient equipment, early alert systems and institutional support to respond to increasingly threatening climate emergencies.

Restoration and Wildlife Response

Equally as important as preventing and fighting fires is the response afterwards. CIWY restores damaged ecosystems by replanting native and fruit-bearing trees and engaging local communities in restoration efforts.

As fires destroy habitats, CIWY also conducts ground surveys to find, rescue and, where possible, rehabilitate wildlife affected by fires.

In 2024, Sanctuary Ambue Ari received a rescued jaguar cub. After almost two years of careful rehabilitation, she was released into the wild in June 2026. Learn more about her recovery, rehabilitation and release here.
